IN ONE PARAGRAPH

STREETS OF NICE is a free 3D beat 'em up you play in your browser. You are the manager of a small video game shop on an avenue in Nice, and a crowd of looters wants the shelves. You hold the door. Punch, kick, throw a PS5, take a kick in the back and come back stronger. It plays like an arcade game from the 90s. No ads, no account, nothing to buy: open the link and play, on a phone or a computer.

WHERE IT COMES FROM

On Saturday 17 October 2026, hundreds of thousands of people marched across France against the cost of living: high school students, unions, Gilets jaunes. Almost all of it was peaceful. In several cities, small groups broke off and looted shops. In Nice, it happened on avenue Jean-Médecin.

One video from that day went around the world: a shop manager standing alone in his doorway, trying to keep the looters out. He said afterwards that the looters were a minority, not the march.

I watched it and it looked like the first stage of a 90s beat 'em up. So I made the beat 'em up.

The hero is fictional. He is an archetype, not the man in the video, and the shop in the game, MEGAZONE, is made up. The enemies are looters in black hoods, not protesters. Passers-by walk the avenue too: hit one and you lose points, and the manager says sorry.

NO FUNDRAISER, NO MONEY

The game is free and takes no money. There is no fundraiser, no donation link and nothing to buy. The real manager warned people about fake online fundraisers using his story. If you see one that uses this game, it is not mine.

WHAT YOU DO

- Hold the door: Round after round against the looters, one shop, one manager. If the shop stock runs out, you lose.
- Arcade fighting: Punch combos, kicks, grabs, throws and a dodge. Easy to pick up, with a combo counter and a grade at the end.
- Everything is a weapon: PS5s, controllers, boxes of games, office chairs, traffic cones, a scooter. Pick it up, throw it.
- The kick in the back: A looter kicks you from behind. The game cuts to a cinematic, and the manager gets back up as SUPER MANAGER.
- Specials and berserk: THE PS5 BLOW, NICE TORNADO, TOTAL CLEARANCE, and a berserk mode when the rage bar is full.
- Summons: A card lies on the street: pick it up and fire it with the super button. Four summons, a different one from run to run: SOLIDARITY! (the shopkeepers of the avenue run in and help you hold it), FURY BEAM! (KENJI steps out of the poster by the door and fires a beam with the manager), FIREFIGHTERS! (a fire engine washes the looters down the street) and LOVE STRIKE! (a magical girl comes down from the sky).
- A boss: THE BATTERING RAM waits at the end of the avenue, an iron shutter in his hands.
- Made for the browser: Loads fast and plays on a phone as well as a computer. Mega Drive style music, the manager's voice in French, subtitles in nine languages.

MUSIC

An original soundtrack for the Mega Drive's Yamaha YM2612 sound chip, composed and produced by me. A tribute to Yuzo Koshiro and the music of Streets of Rage, which has stayed with me since I was a kid and was my biggest inspiration for this game. Thank you, sensei.

WHO MADE IT

I'm Gwendall, I create things with computers, around games, robots and agents. I made STREETS OF NICE alone, in a few days, because the video looked like a game to me. No studio, no publisher, no money behind it. The concept, the game design, the art direction, the pacing, the moves, the lines, the signs: I decided and checked all of it, down to the smallest detail. To move fast I work with my own tools, including coding agents and generative tools for the images, the 3D models and the voices. They are tools, like an engine or a drawing app: the game is mine. I'll probably share more about how I work later.
