UPDATE NOTES

WHAT'S NEW

What changed in the game, update by update, newest first.

  1. UPDATE 1.17

    LATEST
    • The filmed kick now follows the real chain of events: a looter calls the manager out, he walks at him waving him off with big arm gestures, the looter backs away, and the manager turns back to his shop. Nobody bumps or slides any more, and their feet step at the speed they walk.
    • In the filmed kick, the manager now speaks before the kick, sending the looters away ("Allez-vous-en !"), heard through the phone, with captions in your language on the live stream.
    • Passers-by who film now really hold their phone, in both hands, and in a solo game the shot before the filmed kick looks over the filmer's shoulder at his hands on the phone.
    • During a summon, the manager now walks or runs at the pace he moves, and steps backwards when he is pushed back, instead of sliding on his feet.
    • Speech bubbles and markers now follow a moving character smoothly: they no longer shake between two spots like two copies, and a bubble slides along when its speaker runs past you instead of jumping.
    • Menus fit every screen: on a phone held upright OPTIONS keeps its text full size and scrolls, on a computer a setting's name no longer breaks over two lines, and on a phone held sideways the pause menu's AUDIO and DISPLAY pages are no longer cut off.
    • On a phone, CONTROLS now reads at a glance: held upright, each action's keys sit under its name; held sideways, it shows three or four actions at once instead of one, with its buttons on a single row.
  2. UPDATE 1.16

    • In a solo game, the kick now comes through a passer-by's phone: the manager walks back to his door, a passer-by raises a phone, and the kick plays as a live stream before he turns into SUPER MANAGER. It is filmed upright, as on a phone, on every screen. Watching it costs nothing on your grade, and you can hold to skip it, like the kick.
    • On a phone held sideways, "SPARE THE BYSTANDERS" no longer covers your style rank's name: while it shows, the rank keeps just its letter.
    • Turning your phone with a menu open no longer leaves the highlight on the wrong spot or at the wrong size, and on the title screen it stays on the same choice.
  3. UPDATE 1.15

    • CONTROLS has a new SHOW COMBAT HINTS AGAIN button, from the title screen and the pause menu: the fight hints you closed or already learned come back, with the keys or pad buttons you use now. Your bindings stay as they are.
    • In a daily challenge, the day's goal and this try's progress now show under your score during the fight ("THIS TRY 3/10"), with a check mark once it is done. Goals that need the shop saved are never marked done before the end, and a passer-by hit in a no-passer-by challenge says this try is missed. The title card and the end screen now say each try starts from 0: tries never add up, your best try of the day is the one kept.
    • The supers now look like attacks. NICE TORNADO is a spinning lariat: the manager winds up, spins with his arms out in a whirlwind that reaches every looter it hits, a slash on each one, then brakes to a stop. TOTAL CLEARANCE ends in a double-fisted punch into the pavement that sends the whole ring flying.
    • On the MOMENTS OF THIS RUN screen, FORMAT and SPEECH no longer run into their choice, on a phone held sideways or on some computer screens: the choice sits next to its name, or under it on the narrowest screens.
    • Every object you pick up now strikes its own way: an office chair or a scooter swung from the shoulder, a CRT TV or a computer brought down from the shoulder, a box of games or a crowd barrier rammed out at arm's length, a controller or a figurine jabbed straight out. Swings go one way then the other, and the hit that breaks the object is a heavier finisher.
  4. UPDATE 1.14

    • The first time you hit a passer-by, "SPARE THE BYSTANDERS" now waits until you can read it: a pause, a cutscene or a big banner right after the hit no longer uses it up unseen. It still shows only once.
    • Sharing a video of your run now shows that video on the share screen, with SEND VIDEO and DOWNLOAD MP4 first. The other apps are marked as sending a link to your run, not the video, and a line says how to post the video yourself. BACK takes you back to your videos, still ready.
    • At the very end, the email from Management now shows on the screen of the phone in the drawing, at every window size, instead of on a card floating over it.
    • Cutscenes, the story and the ending no longer go away on a single press: hold any button for 1 second to skip them, while a ring fills next to HOLD TO SKIP. A new option, SKIP SEEN SCENES (off by default), skips the scenes you have already watched to the end.
    • On a phone held sideways, "SPARE THE BYSTANDERS" now shows in the gap under your bars instead of across the RAGE gauge, on every screen from 667 to 932 px wide.
    • On the end screen, CLIPS is now VIDEOS OF THIS RUN. Its screen says the moments were caught during this run (highlights picked for you and the ones you saved with CLIP) and to choose one to make its video.
    • In the BONUS STAGE, a pulsing "HIT THE VAN!" now floats over the getaway van for as long as it can take hits, with the 5,000 points a wreck in time is worth. It never covers your fighter and goes once the van is wrecked or drives off.
    • The suplex tip now gives the whole move: grab a looter from behind, then PUNCH. While you hold someone, the line at the bottom of the screen says whether you hold him from the front or from behind, and which button does the suplex.
  5. UPDATE 1.13

    • The "!" warnings over looters and shop windows no longer sit on the HUD: they step aside off the health bars, the boss bar and the cards, with an arrow at their target. Speech bubbles also keep off the summon card and the item you hold.
    • With a keyboard or a pad, the first summon card you pick up no longer shows its "SUMMON!" hint twice: the card by your health bar already says which key fires it.
    • The title music now keeps playing when you open the soundtrack, the press page, the manual or the update notes, and comes back when you return to the title. On the soundtrack page, starting a track fades the title music out instead of playing on top of it.
    • The press page, the soundtrack, the manual and the update notes now show a bar at the top: a way back to the title and links to each other, with the page you are on marked.
    • Before your very first game, a short note says where the game comes from and that it takes no side; it shows once. A new "Why this game" page, linked from the title screen and from OPTIONS, says more. The end credits now close on one line for the shopkeepers, the neighbours, and everyone who marched peacefully.
  6. UPDATE 1.12

    • The control hint at the top of the screen now comes in with its keys showing. It used to show up as an empty dark bubble for its first 0.2 seconds, every time.
    • In the BONUS STAGE, the control hint now sits under the TIME clock instead of covering it.
  7. UPDATE 1.11

    • Five enemies get new nicknames, after what they do in a fight: SHELF SWEEPER and TAKEAWAY empty your shelves, THE PILFERER helps himself, THE BRAWLER picks a fight and HEAVY HITTER hits hard.
    • The looters' portraits, on the card that shows who you are hitting, now match the looters in the street: black gloves on every hand and the same mix of skin tones. The pile of knocked-out looters on the victory screen and on the win share card wears black gloves too.
    • With a summon armed, the card of the enemy you are hitting now sits under the SUMMON slot, top left, instead of behind it.
    • The link preview of the game and of a shared run shows its two knocked-out looters in black gloves too.
    • On a phone held sideways, with a summon armed, the card of the enemy you are hitting stands beside the SUMMON slot, folded to its picture, instead of on the joystick.
    • On a phone held sideways, the style rank (B BRUTAL and its praise words) moves to the top right of the screen, off the joystick.
    • Paused on the NANIII?! just before the SUPER MANAGER transformation, the manager now holds still and the camera stays on his face, behind the PAUSE menu and when you hit RESUME: his head no longer turns round and round and the shot no longer slides down to his hip.
    • On a phone held upright, the NANIII?! of the kick cutscene now sits low on the screen, just above the black bar, instead of over the manager's glasses.
  8. UPDATE 1.10

    • Beat the boss and take your time over it: he goes down in slow motion flat on his back, stars spinning over his head, then Z z z and a snore, and the manager dances for three seconds, the camera on the two of them. A press skips it after 2.5 seconds. The snore stays in that scene: it stops on the end screen, the ending's drawings and the credits. A super that finishes him now ends with him: its backdrop no longer stays behind the whole scene. In the fight THE BATTERING RAM no longer talks in a flat calm: he shouts, mocks you with a laugh and runs out of breath under your blows.
    • End of a daily challenge, no initials yet: ENTER YOUR INITIALS comes up big, with the rank your run would take, so it goes on the day's board in one tap. LATER keeps the small form on the result.
    • Plugging in a gamepad now shows one PAD CONNECTED and nothing else, never a burst of PAD DISCONNECTED. A real unplug still shows PAD DISCONNECTED once and pauses the run, and these notes no longer pile up: a new one takes the place of the last.
    • The DEMO on the title now plays with the music and every sound of a real run, at your settings: volume, mute and STREAMER MODE. Any key, click or tap cuts it at once.
    • Before the SUPER MANAGER transformation, a beat of cold fury: his stare on black, a flash, then one straight red beam comes down behind his head, holds, and bright orange floods out of it behind him. The red beam is now as thick against his head on a computer as on a phone, and comes out from behind his beard, never from his glasses. The beam lands like a single revolver shot, its echo ringing down the empty street. His head is big on a computer and on a phone alike, and on a phone held upright the orange now fills half the picture around him. The scene now opens on a clean frame with the manager and THE COWARD both in view, on a phone held upright too, with no K.O. left over from the last blow and nothing from the street in front of the camera, and THE COWARD's HAHA! is big enough to read on a phone. No more spikes sticking out of his collar when he raises or turns his head. A super still playing when the last looter goes down now ends on the cut: no more super backdrop, name banner or coloured outline over the scene.
    • The SUPER MANAGER transformation now plays in full the first time you see it: HIT TO SKIP only comes back once you have watched it to the end.
    • On a small window (800x600) or a tablet held upright, the SHOP STOCK bar no longer sits on the hero's health bar. On a 360 px phone the CONTROLS table fits the screen, pad column included, long action names no longer run under the keys, and on a phone held sideways THE BATTERING RAM's name shows in full. Above the shop's sign, the dark grey awning box no longer flickers against the stone as the camera moves, and the other shop fronts lose their small flickers too, the corners of the side streets included, where each corner shop now shows its whole window.
    • In a clip saved with DOWNLOAD MP4, the logo no longer hides a title card like MEANWHILE..., a super or a subtitle: it goes under them and fades out while one covers its corner. And the sound now lands right on the picture, no longer a hair late.
  9. UPDATE 1.9

    • Leave the title alone for a while and the game plays itself, the arcade way: a DEMO with combos, supers, summons, the van and the boss. Any key, click, tap or button brings you back to PLAY. It makes no sound and never counts as one of your runs.
    • On a phone held sideways, the title puts the logo and the daily challenge on the left and the menu on the right: nothing covers anything any more.
    • The marchers with signs and the passers-by coming the other way now step aside for each other: nobody stays stuck face to face in a crossing any more.
    • The big stamps over the street now keep clear of the style rank, the combo, the HUD and the hero, and every speech bubble stays up long enough to read, close to whoever speaks, even on a phone held sideways.
    • In the DEMO the manager never hits a marcher or a passer-by: with one in the way, he steps aside or waits for a clear shot.
    • The hint for your first punches and kicks now spells out PUNCH and KICK next to the key or button, not just dots.
    • A tribute to the shopkeepers at the very end of the credits.
    • On a computer screen the title menu no longer slips under the red ribbon: the gamepad hint now shares a line with the menu keys.
  10. UPDATE 1.8

    • Three prices: BARGAIN (easier, score x0.5), REGULAR PRICE (the game as it was, score x1) and FULL PRICE (harder, score x1.5). Pick one in the options; the daily challenge stays at REGULAR PRICE. On a phone held sideways the price under your score stays clear of the buttons.
    • Two losses in a row? The defeat screen offers BARGAIN, no shame. Win once and FULL PRICE opens.
    • A passer-by now films the fight over your shoulder with his phone held upright, screen lit, always in sight on a phone, clear of the buttons. On a big moment he calls CLIP!, and that moment comes up first among your clips. Hit him by mistake and he runs off hunched, his phone hugged to his chest. His bubble, like everyone's, stays beside him, off the hero and the boss.
    • The day's board: finish the daily challenge, sign with three initials and see where you stand among everyone. Only your best try of the day counts. The challenge card on the title holds still under the mouse, a key, a pad or a finger.
    • The marchers with signs no longer turn back at every scare: they step away from the looters, then walk on the way they were going, and the next group comes on time.
    • New look for THE BATTERING RAM: black tracksuit with green reflective stripes, a full-face helmet with a shiny smoked visor, the torn shutter slung over his shoulders. He stands out from the looters at a glance. Hit him hard and you will hear about his helmet.
    • A rare visitor sometimes slips into a march, at the back of the group, his sign a little too perfect. Spot the odd one out, but hit a real marcher and you pay.
    • Nobody raises an arm any more: the crowd claps on big moments, a scared passer-by presses his hands to his chest, blows, falls and guards keep the arms down, and loot is carried off at chest height, never over the head. On the victory screen and in the PS5 super's cut-in, the manager now holds the console in both hands in front of his chest, ready to swing. A knocked-out looter flies off tumbling with his arms folded against his chest. Nobody kneels any more either: a beaten looter turns coward, backs off on his feet waving a little white flag at his chest (spare him for MERCIFUL!), some cowards pull it out on their own when their mates go down, and the van's owner stamps his foot, hands on his hips.
  11. UPDATE 1.7

    • The end screen now shows your grade line by line: stock saved, life, style, best combo and time, each with its points.
    • It also tells you what is missing for the S, and the S is now within reach.
    • The BONUS STAGE van comes with looters: fight them off while you smash it.
    • Leave the van alone and it drives off after 12 seconds. IT'S LEAVING! warns you just before.
    • Fewer crashes on iPhone: the game holds much less memory on the title screen.
    • After several runs in a row, the boss no longer looks broken.
    • Stability fixes.
    • What's new: these update notes, in the game's nine languages, and a NEW badge on the title screen when there is one you have not read.
  12. UPDATE 1.6

    • The game now plays offline once it has loaded a first time.
    • New in OPTIONS: PLAY OFFLINE, INSTALL THE GAME and RELOAD THE GAME.
    • On iPhone, a sheet shows you step by step how to put the game on your home screen.
    • On touch screens, SUPER is a stick: drag to aim it, tap to hit the nearest looter.
    • The boss no longer gets stuck or runs for the exit.
    • Nobody runs in place against a wall any more.
    • During a summon, the street stays as it was: everyone keeps their place.
    • Speech bubbles no longer cover the manager, the touch buttons or the HUD.
  13. UPDATE 1.5

    • Mercy: a beaten looter may drop to his knees and beg. Let him go for MERCIFUL!
    • A rare looter runs off with the till. Catch him for JACKPOT!
    • DAILY CHALLENGE: one run and one goal a day, the same for everyone.
    • Down + throw sends a looter flying into the screen. SPLATCH!
    • Street finishers: hold a looter next to the bins, the shutter or the bargain bin and hit.
    • Mixing up your moves raises your style, and the end screen counts the moves you used.
    • Hits land harder, and a gold ring at the manager's feet keeps him easy to spot in a crowd.
    • The shop front and the signs light up on the beat of the music.
  14. UPDATE 1.4

    • Your first run teaches as you go: a scripted first round and tips at the right moment.
    • Looters carrying your stock are outlined and pointed out: stop them before the door.
    • PARRY! and COUNTER! now feed your style meter without pausing the fight.
    • Comic words no longer pile up on screen.
    • On phones, at most three messages show at once, and speech bubbles step around the buttons and the danger markers.
    • When you lose, a neighbour's gag plays, and PLAY AGAIN puts you straight back in round 1.
  15. UPDATE 1.3

    • A fifth summon: KNUCKLE SANDWICH STORM! TONTON leaves his market stall to help.
    • The game's manual, a 24-page booklet you can flip through online, in English and French.
    • Slow motion no longer slows the voices or the music.
    • Fewer hits in a row: a short break after you get hit, and quicker knockdowns.
    • On phones: a better stick, an aim assist that keeps your target, and a quick tap on a button is never lost.
    • AUTO quality lowers the detail on a slow phone, and the game loads lighter files.
    • The camera is tuned for every screen, phone upright or on its side.
    • Every comic expression is painted on the manager's face, from any angle.
  16. UPDATE 1.2

    • More summons: each card you pick up calls one of them, with its own emblem.
    • FURY BEAM! KENJI steps out of the poster and fires a beam with the manager.
    • FIREFIGHTERS! A fire engine sweeps the street with its water cannon.
    • LOVE STRIKE! The Waifu comes down from the sky and strikes every looter with love.
    • Five summon cards a run, dropped near you so you never miss them.
    • Every item you hold has its name and its own icon.
    • Arrows at the edge of the screen point to the boss, the van, a summon card and the door.
    • The camera always keeps the manager in frame.
  17. UPDATE 1.1

    • The soundtrack has its own page, a link per track, and a SOUND TEST in OPTIONS.
    • The final boss is now THE BATTERING RAM, with his own voice and lines.
    • A real ending, illustrated, with the credits.
    • On phones, three buttons: GRAB, SUPER and RAGE show up only when they count.
    • OPTIONS > SPEECH shows what the characters say as bubbles, subtitles or both.
    • More voiced lines, and the same line never plays twice in a row.
    • Clips now sound and look just like your run.
    • The manager wears real 3D glasses.
  18. UPDATE 1.0

    • STREETS OF NICE is out: hold the door of your video game shop against the looters, right in your browser. Free, no ads.
    • Chain combos, grab and throw, dodge at the last moment to counter, and smash them with a PS5.
    • Take the kick in the back and turn SUPER MANAGER: gold hair, an energy ball and a beam.
    • Four rounds, a van to wreck in the BONUS STAGE, then the boss.
    • SOLIDARITY! The neighbours step in when you call them.
    • Keyboard, gamepad or touch screen, in nine languages.
    • CLIP keeps the last 15 seconds and turns them into a video you can share from the end screen.
